The Sea of Cortez's most spectacular island — reached only by sea.
Plan Your ExpeditionEspíritu Santo Island sits 25 kilometres from La Paz, rising from the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez in a series of ochre cliffs, hidden coves, and pristine white-sand beaches. Jacques Cousteau called this sea the world's aquarium — Espíritu Santo is its living heart.
A UNESCO World Heritage Biosphere Reserve since 2005, the island protects one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on earth. Manta rays cruise beneath your keel. Whale sharks migrate through in winter. And at Los Islotes, a 500-strong California sea lion colony invites you in to play — a wildlife encounter unlike anything available by land.
There is no road to Espíritu Santo. No resort, no development, no crowds. The only way in is the right way: by private boat, at your own pace, on your own terms. BAIA Atelier has sailed these waters extensively and knows exactly where to anchor for the clearest snorkeling, the quietest cove, and the most spectacular sunrise.
The Los Islotes colony is our first stop on every Espíritu Santo charter. California sea lions are naturally curious and playful — they circle you, mimic your movements, and occasionally try to steal your fins. A guided snorkel with our crew in the water alongside you.
We carry two sea kayaks and full snorkel equipment. The island's nested coves — Ensenada Grande, El Candelero, Bonanza — are best explored by paddle, drifting into sea caves and over coral formations that motor boats can't access. The water is warm, calm, and extraordinarily clear.
On multi-night expeditions, we anchor inside the island's protected bays as the sun goes down. The Milky Way emerges without competition from any light pollution. Bioluminescence turns the water electric. Dawn brings the bay entirely to yourself — long before any day trips arrive from shore.

Nights Available
The island glows gold. Coffee brewed below. The bay entirely yours before any motor boats arrive from La Paz. Time moves differently out here.
Sail north to the sea lion colony. Enter the water with mask and fins. The pups dart around you. Adults eye you calmly from the rocks above. One of the great wildlife encounters in the world.
Anchor in Espíritu Santo's largest cove. Kayak the shoreline. Snorkel the reef. A chef-prepared lunch served on deck — fresh ceviche, local tortillas, cold beer. The afternoon is entirely unscheduled.
The sun sets over the Baja peninsula. Dinner cooked below, served as darkness falls and the stars appear. Bioluminescence turns the water below the boat electric. Sleep well.

All expeditions depart from La Paz marina. Fully crewed — captain, first mate, and provisioning included.
Depart La Paz at 8am, return by sunset. Los Islotes sea lions, snorkeling at Ensenada Grande, lunch on deck. The complete Espíritu Santo experience in one long, unhurried day.
The ideal length. Time to circumnavigate the island, explore multiple coves, sleep two nights at anchor under the Milky Way, and return feeling genuinely rested.
Espíritu Santo and beyond — extend north to Isla San Francisco and Isla Partida, reaching anchorages that see almost no other vessels. For groups who want to truly disappear into the Sea of Cortez.
